About whatseasonami.app
whatseasonami.app is a free site with a color season quiz and guides covering all 12 seasons. No account is required before you read the guides or take the quiz.
What's the process behind the color quiz?
After you answer 3 questions, you land on 1 of the 12 seasons. Your camera stays off, and we never request a photo. Indoor bulbs make phone cameras shift your skin tone, so it works better to check your own features.
There are 3 parts of your natural coloring you'll look at:
- Temperature: if your skin and hair lean golden and warm, or rosy and cool.
- Depth: if you stand back from the mirror, how light or dark your features appear.
- Clarity: if your coloring looks sharp and clear, or blended and soft.
Sorting and the color palettes
Shopping for everyday shades like olive or dusty rose is possible because we made our own dataset of named colors. Lightness, color strength and hue, meaning its color family, decide which of the 12 seasons each shade you see belongs to.
By lightness we mean how deep or pale a color looks on you. Color strength tells you if a shade looks vivid, or if gray softens it. A shade brightens your face rather than making your skin look gray when those settings match your coloring.
The limits of an online quiz
Think of an online quiz as a place to start with your palette. Screen brightness and indoor lamps can easily skew how your hair and skin look to you.
Daylight works for checking the result you got. In a mirror, try holding navy or dusty rose fabric up to your face; watch for shadows or a heavy look. An in-person draping, where fabric swatches are tested against your face by a specialist, can settle it when 2 seasons have you torn.
